In 2 months, September 17 tot 19 to be exact, FUDcon EMEA will take place again.
I’m pretty excited about it because there are some great things on the program! To start with there will be the normal barcamp sessions and hackfest like you are used to from normal fudcons, but as an extra there will be some lightning talks before the hackfests. This way people can attract new people to their hackfest, and introduce small and new project to a broad audience. As always with FUDcons everyone is free to host an own session.. so if you have something cool and/or important to share with the world, just add your session to this list.
If that didn’t convince you yet, maybe the following activities that are planned will:
Friday: Wired Dream Party
Saturday: FUDPub
Monday (if you want to stay): visiting CERN (99% sure)
And if that isn’t good enough, we combine our conference with FrOSCamp, so you can be sure you won’t only see Fedora people, but people from all sorts of projects and cultures..
Next week, I’m going to GUADEC in the Hague, Holland.
something I would like to know before I leave on Tuesday, is there someone who wants to take me back (with a car) to Antwerp or Ghent? That would make things easier for me..

yesterday I gave a talk at our hackerspace in Ghent about Selinux.
there were quite a lot of people who attended my talk, but as I said there: it is still a ‘beta version’. I want to thank all the people who attended, and who had some valuable feed back on how to improve the presentation.
it was more a technical overview of selinux than a session with practical examples, maybe I should change the presentation a bit, because it was hard to keep everyone awake..

Dag found that Linux is mentioned in the last publication of De Kiekeboes, a flemish comic for children.
apparently he is running RHEL 5 next to Win XP Pro.. I wonder why he still needs Win XP then? But I think you agree this is a small win for Red Hat and Linux as a whole.
Some time ago I bought a server (well, a set of computer parts I put together to what I now call ‘my server’). The hardware specifications are the following:
CPU: Intel C2D E6300 @ 2.8 GHz
ram: 7986 MB (667MHz)
ASUS P5Q PRO
gpu: MSI NS7600GT (256MB ram on board // passive cooled)
hard disk: 7x WD 1TB black (hw raid 5) + 2xMaxtor DiamondMax10 (soft raid 1)
psu: Corsair 450W
raid controller: ARECA ARC-1222 PCI-Express X8
I know the GPU is ‘a bit’ overkill, but I had this card laying around, so I might as well use it then

maybe things I will think of later, of suggestions you guys give me.
feel free to call me stupid, but I would rather have tips or cool information on the things I want to do. I already have some experience with most tools, but maybe the ‘best practices’ are different. I need these tools, and I want to challenge myself.
This was the opening of Devopsdays2009. Quite a funny clip isn’t it? But what is a devop actually? Kris Buytaert is an expert on the subject, and I found a nice presentation of him explaining the concept:
DevOps is not about operators or developers, it is about how to get things done the right way. DevOps is also about how operators talk to developers, but is not about an operator who becomes a developer and visa versa.
A dev team that follows the DevOps principle, talks to the operators during the development of the applications. What do we need? What can we get? Doing you development on the same machines as the ones the production runs on, is always good. You find the bugs faster, you find other issues faster, and you end up with a better product, while you shorten the development time.
I’m already looking forward to the next devopsdqys in Europe. I just might join them to learn more, and share my own thoughts about the subject.
Yesterday we had our second Fedora release party. This time the event was held in Ghent, at our beloved hackerspace .
I arrived around 5.30pm, almost together with Vincent. He started out with placing the PXE boot server, and I went out hanging Fedora banners around the place, so people would find the venue in the labyrinth.
We expected some new people because the date of our event felt together with with the end of puppetcamp. But there were some regular Fedora attendees too. Around 8pm I asked Kris to order some pizzas via just-eat (he already has an account there). The regular hackerspace people were surprised we we ate 13 pizza’s.
After my talk Dag Wieers gave a lightning talk about his tool Dstat. In the end his talk lasted more than one hour. He showed us a nice demo of Dstat’s features. It was really cool because we weren’t even sure Dag would come.
After his talk it was time for some regular chit chat, and share some business cards
