Fedora 12 release party in Belgium

6 responses, Nov 03, 2009

Yes, this will be the first Fedora release party in Belgium since a long time (maybe this IS the first one in Belgium, I don’t know for sure)

So, I hope all the belgian Fedora contributors will come to this event, this would be a great opportunity for a get-together. Off course, also other people are welcome on this event -Fedora users, or people that want to start with linux-. We will help people installing fedora -there will be a local mirror-, try to give them some useful tips, and maybe we’ll throw in a more serious talk too. This is also an opportunity to get to know the Fedora contributors in Belgium.
So, if you’re coming, please register on this page (this _is not_ necessary), but it is useful for us to know how many people are coming!

I created the poster in inkscape, on A4 format, so feel free to print them, and hang the poster in your school / work / wherever you want ;-)

I hope I see you guys there, the 28 of november!

cheers,
Bert

maemo summit 2009

1 response, Oct 13, 2009

Hi!

Last weekend, I went to the maemo summit in amsterdam, at the westergasfabriek. I can say that it was a very nice location!

maemo summit

I left on thursday evening, after my schoollab, and took the train from Ghent to Antwerp-Berchem. I met a friend (and his colleague)  there, and went for some food (French fries) in a local place. From there, we drove to the ibis hotel, in Amsterdam, next to the central station. after checking in around 23h, we went to the beer event, were I saw some familiar faces, like Lennart and Dimitriz.

the next day, after breakfast we went to the westergasfabriek. we arrived there at about 9h30, went to the registrations were we got a T-shirt, some information about amsterdam,the event, and moved to the N900 room (how original). We were right on time, we took one of the last available seats, and were ready for the talks. At the end of the second talk, the speaker announced that we would all get a nokia N900. As one can imagine, the audience went crazy! the third talk was from Jim Zemlin, Executive Director @ Linux Foundation, who gave a talk about why linux will prevail. I found that talk really interesting! while we had lunch, we could get our brand new nokia n900, and some skype gear, like a webcam and a some ear buts. I can say that most people paid more attention to there phone than to the talks ;)

during the evening we teamed up with another fedorian who is living in Amsterdam, and went to an italian place to grab some food, and went to the nokia party around 22h, were we met some new people. (and found out that you can buy Jupiler in some places in Amsterdam :P )

on Saterday the community day started (an let us be honest, we ARE community people). after the keynotes, I went to the N800 room to hear some talks about GTKmm and QT (webkit integration). After hearing these talks I’m considering trying some things with QT, for maemo. After lunch we went to the N900 room were we watched some ligtning talks, and for the rest of that day we kept following the main track. that evening we met Andreas again(the fedorian). He was accompanied by  2 americans who were couch surfing at his house. after the free drinks that Nokia offered us, we ate a steak (wich was delicious!) and drank a Whiskey at a specialised bar.I think it was the first time I drunk one . we ended our evening at a coffee shop ;-) .

the gang ;-)

on sunday, Dieter needed some more sleep, so it was around 11h when we were there. but I think we didn’t mis much (only the showcase of some applications). from then on we’ve stayed in the main track. I only doubted about the last talk (I was interested in the telepathy talk), but I couldn’t miss my friend Dimitriz talk. although he had some timing problems ;-) After the ‘grand finale’ we found out that alot of bugs are fixed in Fremantle ;-) . We said some guys goodbye, and we drove home (thank you Dieter!)

so yeah, I can look back on a great summit! see you again next year, maemo people!

linux tag

No response, Jun 29, 2009

hi all!

long time no seen :)
(on this blog at least)
so, what have I done the last week?

I went to Linux-tag in Berlin as a fedora representative. I did some booth work (#), and was planning on attending some English talks, because my German is… … ehm, not good ;-) but I didn’t make it to the talks, I visited the other booths, and socialised with other people in stead. friday was the first day of fudcon, the Fedora users and developers conference. I was the first time I visited fudcon, but I think it was really interesting!
at the first day we did some hacking, we chilled a bit, and we worked on the presentations for the barcamp.
friday was also fudbar, a fedora event in the ‘en passant’, a restaurant in Berlin, were we could enjoy free pizza’s, and meet up with other FOSS people.

Saturday was barcamp day!
I was planning on giving a talk about the fedora ambassadors project, but I changed the subject (wel, max did) to the event box.
after a quick introduction on what the ambassadors project is to some red hat folks that wanted to join this project, we talked with some other (very important) emea ambassadors about our own eventbox, and we made some decisions about it. so I think there will come a fedora-emea event box!
this night I went eating with the Yaakov, Max and some of the Germans in a steakhouse. I thought it was quite expensive, but the steak was great.
afther our meal, we moved to C-base, were the Ubuntu people had there bbq.

Sunday was the hackfest day,
I worked a bit on my own project (devpoint), Jeroen, Chitlesh, and I had a talk about the spin process, and yeah, we chilled a bit ;-)
in the evening we went to some traditional place in Berlin, were we had a good (traditional?) mael, and some decent beer!
I am used to Belgian beer, and well… this was the first beer I had in Berlin that I could compare to Belgian beer.

Monday I had a breakfast at the hotel, and went toghetter with Jesse to the airport. after I checked in, and went to security blablabla, I took a place near to the security.. there I saw a funny thing, some girl had to open her hand luggage because when they scanned the luggage, they saw a strange object.. so she had to take that out, and guess, it was a vibrator! her parents were not amused, and she was totally embarrassed!

that was so cool to watch :D

so, I can say that I had a great time, I am really happy that I was there

you can find the pictures here: (#). you can copy them, and use them, I wouldn’t bother about the facebook license ;-)

brucon 2009

1 response, Jun 01, 2009

yesterday I heard for the first time about brucon (#) (thx to inode0).

Because it looks like a really interesting conference, I think it would be cool to be there with some other fedora people. If there are enough Fedora people, I will also try to set up a booth there. please note that I am not yet sure if a booth will be possible, the organisation asked me to join them in their next crew meeting. When a booth would be possible, maybe we could share one with the CentOS team.

If you are planning to come, please check this page (#) on the Fedora wiki

21 and invincible

the title of a song by Something Corporate (#)…

yes, it’s my birthday today, and guess what, I turned 21 today!

I expected it to be totally different, turning 21, I thought I would have a girlfriend, my first diploma, my own apartment / studio, …, … from this moment,
but I have… well, none of these things ;-)

It seems that I fuck everything up that I try, from lack of courage, I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but I can’t set my mind for a long time to something, like yeah, I love coding.. but after an hour, I have to do something else, or when studying, I would rather look out the window for an hour.. why? I don’t know, it just doesn’t work for me :(

if someone can help me, please comment to this post ;-)
otherwise, I’ll quote a part of this song that is probably very true for me:

We’re 21 and invincible
Can’t wait to screw this up
We’re 21 and invincible
I’m in power for the hour
I guess today’s gonna blow us away

yes, this is how I feel now ;-)

anyway: happy Birthday to myself!

Religions -the past & and the future-

No response, May 18, 2009

Yesterday I had a discussion with a good friend (Julie) about other cultures and other religions in Europa, what’s good about it, what’s not so good about it, …

As one can Imagine, we weren’t talking about Jews, but about the Islam. My political view is central-right, and hers is left, so that means that we have a different view on such things, and I thought we had an interesting conversation about it.

So first I want to show you a nice presentation about the history and spreading from the Religions trough the years.

now that we know that, we can go further. In the next clip I’ll show you what is happening now, but be aware, I am quite sure that the clip is made by a right movement, so don’t believe EVERYTHING in it, but I think the essence is true.

So my fear is that when Europe would become a Muslim state, a lot of our knowledge would go lost, because “it isn’t true what we discover according to the Koran”. right… This thought is based on a fragment I saw from ‘weg naar mekka’, a Canvas program (#) (Dutch)

I would be pleased if you shared your thoughts about this subject too :)

upgrading to Fedora 11 Preview Release from Fedora 10

7 responses, May 06, 2009

today, I decided it was time to upgrade my laptop from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 PR. So I opened my console and typed in the following commands:

$ su -
* pw: *****
$ yum update
$ preupgrade

The last command opened a new window, where I could select the release that I wanted to install on my laptop.  Make sure you enable ‘Display unstable test releases above’, and select Rawhide.

Now you just wait, and wait, and did I already mention wait? The software automaticly downloads the necessary packages and such.

after I went through the (very easy) installation process, it took ages to boot fedora 11 (where it is furious fast on my desktop), and I only got a black screen, with a console mouse..

While I was wondering about what was wrong, I remembered that the nvidia drivers are proprietary.. that means that you can’t find them in the normal fedora repos. and FC10 packages don’t run on FC11 ;-)

how to fix it:
open a console window
$ su -
* pw: *****
$ rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-rawhide.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-rawhide.noarch.rpm
$ yum update
$ reboot

and you should be able to enjoy your computer again with Fedora 11 RC running!

don’t forget to post bugs (#)!

OLPCafé – Brussels/Elsene

No response, Apr 11, 2009

Thursday, 8 April I went to Brussels for the first OLPC cafe. Frederic(#) and Bart (#) invited me. I was really interested in the subject, an introduction to the OLPC -One Laptop Per Child-. I had already worked with it, on the fedora boot at Fosdem, but I wanted to learn more about this fantastic machine.

OLPC

So, I took the train around 3u50 in Ghent-Sint-Pieters to Brussels-Nord, from there I took a ‘lijn’-bus to the NATO buildings, and from there I had to run too the IBM building, where I met Bart. from there we went to the Roxi Bar (#) by car.

around 19h, when the meeting really started, we were with about 15 a 20people.. nobody had expected such a group! there were people from New Zealand, Germany, Rwanda, Morocco,  Italy, …, so that was really nice!

In this first session we got some information about the OLPC project, and about the laptop. Because we were with so many, not everybody could use a OLPC, but sharing one with other people was no problem. We went trough a simple smoke test (#)  -> the ‘Try out a few Activities’ test. even trough this simple test, we found some bugs. that proves why it’s so important to do this tests, and it’s always more fun in a group of people all doing +- the same things!

One thing is for sure, when I can drive along with Bart again, you’ll find me there back next week :)

some more information about the meeting (#)

there will be another meeting next Thursday (but probably at another place), feel free to join us!

a part of the group
